A spotter's primary mission is to prevent injury, which means the spotter themselves needs to be healthy, alert, and in good physical condition — strength, flexibility, and alertness aren't optional. Undivided attention matters more than almost anything else: a moment's distraction can mean a missed cue or a delayed reaction, so a spotter's focus needs to stay locked onto the flyer's movement the entire time.
Know the move, not just the position
A good spotter understands not just the mechanics of a move but the intention behind it — that's what allows them to anticipate the flyer's trajectory and be in the right position to help before something goes wrong, not after. Familiarity with common failure points in a given move lets a spotter preemptively position themselves where an accident is most likely to happen.
