Every Beyond The Mat order is packed with care at our home base in Bali, Indonesia — and when stock allows, orders may also ship from regional fulfillment points in Belgium or the United States to get gear to you faster and at lower cost.
When Import Charges Apply
Import charges only come into play when your order crosses into your customs region from outside it. If your order ships from a fulfillment point inside your own region — for example, an EU order fulfilled from Belgium — you typically won't face import charges at all.
When your order does cross a border (most commonly, shipments from our Bali workshop), your country's government may apply charges on arrival. These are set entirely by your local customs authority — not by us — and can include:
- Import duty / customs duty — a tax based on the type and value of the goods.
- VAT, GST, or local sales tax — your country's consumption tax on imported goods.
- Customs clearance or handling fees — charged by the carrier for processing your shipment through customs on your behalf.
- Cash-on-delivery collection fees — an administrative fee some carriers add when collecting duties at the door.
Beyond The Mat does not receive any portion of these charges. Every cent goes to your local customs authority or the carrier.
Who Is Responsible for These Charges
Import duties, taxes, and any carrier-side clearance fees are the responsibility of the recipient — that's you, the customer. They are not included in your product price or the shipping cost you paid at checkout. They are billed separately by the carrier or your local customs authority, usually before or at the time of delivery.
If a package is refused or returned to us because import charges were not paid, the original shipping cost and any return or non-recoverable fees may be deducted from any applicable refund.
How Much Will It Be?
Honestly, it depends. Import charges vary by country, product category, and order value, and we can't calculate or predict the exact amount for you — that's between your government and your wallet.
Before ordering, check with your local customs office or search for an import duty calculator for your country — a quick search for "[your country] import duty calculator" is usually a good place to start.
Why We're Telling You This
Because surprise charges on your doorstep are not the experience we want you to have. We'd rather be upfront — even if it means a slightly awkward conversation before checkout — than leave you wondering what that extra bill is about when your gear arrives.

These customer-paid import-charge terms concern ordinary purchases. For warranty replacements and remedies required by consumer law, the warranty shipping terms and statutory protections below apply.
Warranty returns and replacement shipping
We assess warranty claims from photographs or video first. Do not send a product back until we confirm the return address and shipping arrangements. For an approved claim, Beyond The Mat covers the covered replacement product or component and reasonable return shipping when we require the affected item to be returned.
Where legally permitted, customers pay the shipping cost of sending the replacement product or component to their address, plus any applicable import duties, taxes, or customs and carrier clearance fees. We confirm the shipping charge and explain potential customs charges before dispatch; customs charges are set by the relevant authority or carrier and may not be known in advance.
Where consumer law requires a remedy at no cost, Beyond The Mat covers the costs required by that law, including necessary delivery charges. In particular, customers do not pay replacement delivery for a qualifying EU statutory defect remedy. These terms do not reduce statutory consumer rights.
When Beyond The Mat sends the wrong item, we cover reasonable return and corrective delivery costs. We may provide a safe replacement component, use an appropriate regional return address, or agree another remedy instead of requiring an unnecessary international return.
The replacement-shipping terms apply to orders placed on or after 14 October 2026. For earlier orders, we honour the terms and promises applicable when the purchase was made.
